About Winton

There are so many things to do in Winton, you'll need a few days to see everything and experience our little town - Winton certainly punches above it's weight.
It would take a few days just to get through all of the evening activities.

Too many people say they should have spent more time in Winton so please give yourself at least 3 nights to have a look at all the things to do - some will take 10 minutes, some will take half an hour, some an hour, some all day - it really depends on your interests, but there is something for everyone!

I could list all of the things to do and see in Winton here on this page, in fact I started, but our Winton Shire Council already have a website that captures everything alrso there's no need to replicate that. Check out Experience Winton.

I have put together a few bits of information that we get asked - mostly about how to get to Winton. See below graphic and information.

Picture
By Road - Self Drive: Winton is in western Queensland along fully sealed highways. Here are some distances to our neighbouring towns (and approx driving times):
          Longreach: 180km (1hr 50mins)
          Cloncurry: 350km (3hrs 45mins)
          Hughenden: 215km (2hrs 20mins)
Richmond: 230km (2hrs 30mins) - via the Winton-Richmond Rd (approx 20km of dirt road at the Winton end)
Boulia: 362km (4hrs) (some narrow bitumen sections - give way to anything bigger than you!)

By Road - Greyhound Bus: Greyhound Bus leaves Brisbane (bound for Mount Isa) Monday to Friday - which means you can catch the bus from Longreach (dep. 8.25am) to Winton (arr. ~11.00am)on Tuesday to Saturday.
It then leaves Mount Isa (bound for Brisbane) on Wednesday to Sunday - so these are the days you can catch the bus from Winton (dep. ~12.55pm) to Longreach (arr. ~3.55pm).

By Train: Catch the Spirit of the Outback train from Brisbane to Winton! The train stops in Longreach and a RailBus will transport you the final 180km.
So book all the way to/from Winton!! The train departs twice a week from Brisbane:
          1. Departs Brisbane on Saturday and arrives Longreach and Winton on Sunday afternoon.
          2. Departs Brisbane on Tuesday and arrives Longreach and Winton on Wednesday evening.
On its return, the Rail Bus leaves Winton to connect with the train departure in Longreach on Monday and Thursday.

By Air: REX Airlines comes from Townsville to Winton twice a week - Tuesday and Thursday. The route they take is Townsville-Winton-Longreach-Winton-Townsville in the day.
If you are in Brisbane, catch the Qantaslink flight from Brisbane to Longreach and then change planes and fly REX from Longreach to Winton.
If you are in Townsville, you come direct to Winton.

By Private Plane/Charter: YWTN - 194m above sea level.
The airport is approx 7km from Winton town so you will need a lift. If you are staying in town, ask your accommodation if they will pick you up at the airport. We (Red Dirt Tours) can also do airport pick ups/drop offs and we can do private transfers to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. Please send us an email to enquire!

Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede Air Strip - There is also a dirt (dry weather) airstrip near Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede. This is approx 110km drive from Winton, and approx 51nm from the Winton Airport (YWTN). This airstrip is still 2km from the Dinosaur Stampede attraction so it is best to ring ahead to have the staff at the Stampede pick you up.
