How to Get to Winton

By Road: Winton is in western Queensland along fully sealed highways. Here are some distances to our neighbouring towns (and approx driving times):
          Longreach: 180km (1hr 50mins)
          Cloncurry: 350km (3hrs 45mins)
          Hughenden: 215km (2hrs 20mins)
          Richmond: 230km (2hrs 30mins) - via the Winton-Richmond Rd
          Boulia: 362km (4hrs)

By Train: Catch the Spirit of the Outback train from Brisbane to Winton! The train stops in Longreach and a Rail Connect Bus will transport you the final 180km.
So book all the way to/from Winton!! The train departs twice a week from Brisbane:
          1. DepartsBrisbane on Saturday - arrives Longreach and Winton on Sunday afternoon.
          2. Departs Brisbane on Tuesday - arrives Longreach and Winton on Wednesday evening.
On its return, the Rail Bus leaves Winton to connect with the train departure in Longreach on Monday and Thursday.

By Air: REX Airlines comes from Townsville to Winton twice a week - Tuesday and Thursday. The route they take is Townsville-Winton-Longreach-Winton-Townsville in the day. So if you are in Brisbane, catch the Qantaslink flight from Brisbane to Longreach and then change planes and fly REX from Longreach to Winton.

Things to See and Do in Winton

Dinosaurs
There are TWO dinosaur attractions in Winton:
          1. Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede - 110km south west of Winton (down the Jundah Rd).
This is the exact site where dinsoaurs ran through the mud approx 100 million years ago, leaving behind footprints that were preserved. The tracks were discovered in the 1960's and excavated in the 1970's and are now conserved within a Queensland protected area - Lark Quarry Conservation Park. To see the Stampede/trackway is via the onsite 45 minute tour only.  You can make a day of it and come with us on our full day or 3/4 day tours incorporating scenic views and interesting nature and history commentary along the way.

          2. Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum (AAOD) - 24km east of Winton (turn off 12km along the highway to Longreach).
The museum is a not for profit organisation founded by local sheep graziers, David and Judy Elliott, in 2002. The museum relocated from their grazing property to the "Jump Up" in 2009 where they have been building the museum in stages - the Fossil Preparation Laboratory (the Lab - where they take the rock off the bone), Reception Centre (housing the Collection Room with already prepared bones, a souvenir shop and a small cafe) and the Dinosaur Canyon complex (wheelchair accessible bordwalk through Dinosaur Canyon with life sized bronze dinosuar statues in outdoor galleries; March of the Titanosaurs - a dinosaur trackway relocated from a property 80km away in order to preserve it; and the Gondwana Stars Observatory). The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History is a world-class museum and houses the world's largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils.

At the museum you must do their tours to see anything - remember this is a not for profit museum benefiting our local community. The Ultimate Dinosaur Tour takes in the Lab, Collection Room, March of the Titanosaurs and Dinosaur Canyon. You can drive yourself to the museum or you can travel with us on our Age of Dinosaurs Museum Half Day Guided Transfer - we pick you up in Winton, provide interesting commentary along the way and then join the museums tours once there.
